At TX Driver Training in Glasgow, we like to keep all our driving instructors and pupils up to date with the latest changes and proposals from the Driving Standards Agency (the government body that sets up the driving test). The latest information received advises that the Driving Standards Agency is proposing changes in the way people learn to drive, most notably the introduction of an assessment of competence to drive "independently" across all Driving Standards Agency practical tests, with effect from October 2010.
The Agency is proposing the introduction of a section of independent driving within the practical test, to allow the examiner to assess more "normal" driving. This will be achieved by removing regular direction given by the examiner on the test for approximately 10 minutes. This will place an increased onus on the candidate to drive as if on his or her own. Throughout this period, the driver will have to make decisions in a timely and independent manner, managing both the route and traffic conditions. This will be achieved in one of the following ways:
- Drive following traffic signs to a particular destination or landmark – e.g. "Follow signs for Glasgow City Centre".
- Drive following a short series of directions – e.g. "At the roundabout take the second exit for Glasgow north then follow the road until the traffic lights and turn left onto Glasgow Road."
- Drive following a combination of traffic signs / series of directions, depending on local road and traffic conditions.
Once this has been completed, the examiner will give directions as normal for the remainder of the driving test. Deviation from the route will not be penalised unless driving or serious errors are made, in which case the candidate will be marked accordingly.
At present, this is all the information we have. Once we have received clarification on some points and confirmation that it will definitely be included in all practical driving tests, your driving instructor will be introducing this into your lessons and intensive courses in and around Glasgow. We hope that you find this information useful as this driving school is committed to keeping our customers informed of any changes that can affect their driving lessons and test.
